Close your eyes. The Chichibu basin wraps around you — a circle of mountains holding an ancient conversation.
You stand before Chichibu Jinja, whose history reaches back before the written word.
Inhale. The air here carries the scent of cedar, silk, and the faint sweetness of old festival incense.
Chichibu is a thinker's shrine. And thinkers, sometimes, just need a quiet mountain to sit with.
Mythos
Yagokoro Omoikane — the deity of deep thought, the strategist of the gods.
When Amaterasu hid in the cave, it was Omoikane who devised the plan to draw her out. Not by force. Not by pleading. But by creating a celebration so joyful the goddess could not resist peeking.
Chichibu teaches: wisdom is not solemnity. It is play, structured by insight.
What problem in your life are you trying to solve by pushing? What if the path is to create something so alive, the answer walks toward you on its own?
Sacred Resonance
Walk to the carved panels of the main hall — horses, tigers, owls, all arranged with careful humor.
One panel shows three monkeys, cousins of Nikkō's famous trio but distinct — here, they do not cover eyes, ears, or mouth. They look directly at you.
Stand before them. Notice: they are asking you to see, to hear, to speak.
The thinker's shrine values consciousness, not suppression.
Let your gaze meet theirs. What have you been refusing to acknowledge?
Tailwind Blessing
Bow. Clap twice — curious, playful, alert. Bow.
Leave through the old torii. Pause at the edge of the basin, wind at your back.
The Chichibu wind descends from the surrounding peaks — Divine Tailwind, crisp with insight.
Every breath is a thought made motion.
Walk on, clarified one. The mountains do your thinking with you.

Etiquette
Bow once before passing under the torii
The torii marks the threshold between the everyday world and the sacred. A small bow acknowledges the crossing.
Purify at the temizuya (water pavilion)
Left hand, then right, then rinse your mouth from the left, then cleanse the handle. One ladle of water carries you through all four motions.
At the main hall: two bows, two claps, one bow
Deep bow twice, clap twice with intention, offer your silent greeting, then one final deep bow. No coin is required.
Leave quietly. Let the shrine follow you out
A pilgrimage does not end at the gate. The stillness travels with you.
