Close your eyes. The Saga plain spreads under a wide sky, and a thousand chestnut trees once gave this shrine its name.
You stand before Chiriku Hachimangū — its long stone staircase rising toward the upper hall.
Breathe in. Sweet earth, autumn-scented even in spring.
Mythos
Hachiman — Emperor Ōjin — and Empress Jingū, with Emperor Chūai. A family triad of warrior protection.
But the chestnut grove gives the deeper teaching: a thousand chestnuts mean a thousand small offerings — abundance built one chestnut at a time.
What small daily offering have you been making, perhaps unaware? A kindness to a colleague? A gentle word to your child? A coin in a vending machine for someone behind you?
Chiriku whispers: a thousand small kindnesses are worth more than one large mon
Sacred Resonance
Climb the long staircase slowly. Count, in your mind, ten kindnesses you have done this month.
By the time you reach the top, the count itself is the prayer.
Tailwind Blessing
Bow. Clap twice — soft as a chestnut falling. Bow.
Descend. Step out onto the Saga plain, wind at your back.
The plain wind meets you — Divine Tailwind, chestnut-sweet.
Every breath is a small kindness offered.
Walk on, generous one. The grove counts your offerings.

Etiquette
Bow once before passing under the torii
The torii marks the threshold between the everyday world and the sacred. A small bow acknowledges the crossing.
Purify at the temizuya (water pavilion)
Left hand, then right, then rinse your mouth from the left, then cleanse the handle. One ladle of water carries you through all four motions.
At the main hall: two bows, two claps, one bow
Deep bow twice, clap twice with intention, offer your silent greeting, then one final deep bow. No coin is required.
Leave quietly. Let the shrine follow you out
A pilgrimage does not end at the gate. The stillness travels with you.
