Kamigamo Jinja.
Just upstream from its sister shrine in the same forest valley, this is one of the oldest places of worship in Kyoto.
When you enter the inner grounds, you will see something strange. Two perfectly conical mounds of white sand, each about a meter and a half tall, each topped with a small bundle of pine needles.
They are called the Tatesuna. They have been here, in this exact form, for over a thousand years.
What are they?
According to ancient understanding, they represent the sacred mountain that stands behind the shrine. Long before any building was built, before any priest arrived, before Kyoto existed, this mountain was where prayer began. The two mounds are the mountain, made small and pure, brought down to where humans can stand before it.
Each time the mounds erode, they are rebuilt. Each time they are rebuilt, they are exactly the same shape they have always been.
You may walk past them slowly. Do not step between them. They are not decoration. They are still, in this exact moment, doing their work.
A small stream called Nara no Ogawa runs through the grounds. The sound has not changed in twelve hundred years.
Sit beside the water. Listen.
This is what continuity sounds like.
