Toga Jinja.
In the eastern part of Aichi Prefecture, sits a shrine that exists in two places at once.
The lower hall sits in the village, easy to reach. The upper hall sits at the summit of Mount Hongu, 790 meters above sea level. The two halls are considered a single shrine. To worship completely, traditionally, you visit both.
The mountain itself is the deity. Its perfect cone shape rises from the surrounding plain, visible from many kilometers away. For centuries, on New Year's Day, locals would climb to the summit to watch the first sunrise of the year — a tradition still practiced today.
Standing at the lower hall, you face the mountain. Walking to the upper hall, you become part of it. The shrine is designed to be experienced not just by visiting, but by ascending.
The forest on the slopes is some of the oldest in the region. Cedar trees over five hundred years old line the trail. The summit is small enough that on a quiet day, you can hear yourself breathing.
Most modern visitors stop at the lower hall. The climb takes time. The trail is steep in places. The reward is not immediate.
But the people who climb come back changed. They have walked into the deity, rather than only standing before it.
Stand at the lower gate. The mountain is waiting, above the trees.
Some places ask you to walk further than you planned, and reward you in ways you did not expect.
