Close your eyes. The Ikoma mountains rise behind you, marking the border between Yamato and Kawachi.
You stand before Hiraoka Jinja — a shrine whose deity once whispered the right words at the right moment to draw the sun goddess from her cave.
Breathe in. Plum blossoms scent the air in early spring.
This shrine is for the ones who choose their words like seeds.
Mythos
Ame-no-Koyane-no-Mikoto — the deity of liturgy, of the perfectly chosen sacred word.
Hime-mikami — the divine consort, embodiment of receptive grace.
When Amaterasu hid in the cave, Ame-no-Koyane chanted the prayer that lured her out. Words can do that.
What word, said correctly today, would draw your own light from hiding?
Hiraoka teaches: the right word, said at the right moment, is more powerful than any army.
Sacred Resonance
Find the plum grove on the grounds. Even when the trees are not blooming, their bark holds the memory of every spring.
Stand near a tree. Whisper one true word — to it, or to yourself.
The tree files this word among its rings. You will find it again, years later, in a fragrance.
Tailwind Blessing
Bow. Clap twice — clear as a chanted syllable. Bow.
Leave. Step out onto the Kawachi plain, wind at your back.
The Ikoma wind meets you — Divine Tailwind, plum-scented, ceremonial.
Every breath is a syllable spoken with care.
Walk on, articulate one. The cave is opening.

Etiquette
Bow once before passing under the torii
The torii marks the threshold between the everyday world and the sacred. A small bow acknowledges the crossing.
Purify at the temizuya (water pavilion)
Left hand, then right, then rinse your mouth from the left, then cleanse the handle. One ladle of water carries you through all four motions.
At the main hall: two bows, two claps, one bow
Deep bow twice, clap twice with intention, offer your silent greeting, then one final deep bow. No coin is required.
Leave quietly. Let the shrine follow you out
A pilgrimage does not end at the gate. The stillness travels with you.
