Kaijin Jinja

The Shrine on the Border Island of the Sea
Spirit
Close your eyes. You have crossed even further. Tsushima Island stretches between Japan and the Korean peninsula — a green border guarded by the sea. You stand before Kaijin Jinja — the head shrine of Tsushima, dedicated to the sea princess. Breathe in. The wind here carries two languages.
Mythos
Toyotama-hime — the sea princess again, here in her own home territory. The deity who marries earth-prince Hikohohodemi and bears the imperial line. Tsushima is a borderland. Its prayers are bilingual. Its winds carry information from both sides. Have you been ashamed of your own borderland identity — the part of you that belongs to two cultures, two languages, two stories? Kaijin whispers: borderlands are where the most important things are translated. You are a translator. Honor your role.
Sacred Resonance
Walk to a place from which you can see water. Imagine the Korean coast, just over the horizon. Notice that you are at a meeting point. The sea here belongs to no one and everyone. You are also a meeting point. Honor this.
Tailwind Blessing
Bow. Clap twice — clear as a translation perfectly delivered. Bow. Leave. Step out onto the Tsushima coast, wind at your back. The border wind meets you — Divine Tailwind, bilingual, translating. Every breath crosses one more boundary. Walk on, translator one. The sea is yours, and theirs, and ours.
Reasons to Visit
Etiquette
Bow once before passing under the torii
The torii marks the threshold between the everyday world and the sacred. A small bow acknowledges the crossing.
Purify at the temizuya (water pavilion)
Left hand, then right, then rinse your mouth from the left, then cleanse the handle. One ladle of water carries you through all four motions.
At the main hall: two bows, two claps, one bow
Deep bow twice, clap twice with intention, offer your silent greeting, then one final deep bow. No coin is required.
Leave quietly. Let the shrine follow you out
A pilgrimage does not end at the gate. The stillness travels with you.
