Close your eyes. The sea of Jōetsu glimmers nearby, its gray waves carrying northern weather.
You stand before Kota Jinja — a shrine with a legend of love that crossed the mountains and returned.
Breathe in. This shrine is small, but its story runs the width of Japan.
Mythos
Ōkuninushi — the earth weaver — and Nunakawa-hime, the jade princess of Itoigawa, his beloved.
Their love produced Takeminakata, the warrior who would later flee to Suwa.
But here, in Kota, the story is about beginning — when a god walked hundreds of miles to meet a woman who had called him with a poem.
Have you been walked to? Has someone come all the way to find you?
Have you ever walked far for someone — and been glad you did?
Kota is the shrine of the long-earned reunion.
Sacred Resonance
Walk to the rear of the shrine, where an old stone marks where the god once paused.
Stand beside the stone. Feel how stillness can hold the memory of a long walk.
Every reunion you have had was preceded by many unseen steps.
Every love that reached you was walked to you, from somewhere.
Tailwind Blessing
Bow. Clap twice — like two hands meeting after a long separation. Bow.
Leave. Step out onto the coast road, facing Itoigawa, wind at your back.
The Japan Sea wind meets you — Divine Tailwind, salt and jade-green.
Every breath is a step toward someone.
Walk on, returning one. Love has always been a long walk. You are almost there.

Etiquette
Bow once before passing under the torii
The torii marks the threshold between the everyday world and the sacred. A small bow acknowledges the crossing.
Purify at the temizuya (water pavilion)
Left hand, then right, then rinse your mouth from the left, then cleanse the handle. One ladle of water carries you through all four motions.
At the main hall: two bows, two claps, one bow
Deep bow twice, clap twice with intention, offer your silent greeting, then one final deep bow. No coin is required.
Leave quietly. Let the shrine follow you out
A pilgrimage does not end at the gate. The stillness travels with you.
