Nakayama Jinja

The Shrine of the Mirror-Maker
Spirit
Close your eyes. Mimasaka's gentle valleys cradle you, and Mount Nakayama rises modestly behind the shrine. You stand before Nakayama Jinja — a shrine for the deity who taught humans to make mirrors of polished bronze. Breathe in. The air is bright, almost reflective.
Mythos
Kagamitsukuri-no-Kami — the mirror-maker, the god of the craft of seeing oneself. Before mirrors, no one knew their own face. Before mirrors, "self-knowledge" was a strange and partial idea. What kind of mirror have you been refusing to look into? A friend's honest words? A journal entry from a year ago? Your own reflection at the end of a long day? Nakayama whispers: the courage to look is the beginning of every transformation.
Sacred Resonance
Find any reflective surface in the grounds — a polished stone, a still puddle, a bronze fitting. Look. Do not adjust. Notice what your face says when you are not arranging it. This face is also you. It has things to say.
Tailwind Blessing
Bow. Clap twice — bright as polished bronze. Bow. Leave. Step out onto the Mimasaka road, wind at your back. The wind meets you — Divine Tailwind, mirror-clear. Every breath is an honest glance. Walk on, mirrored one. The face you saw was kinder than you thought.
Reasons to Visit
Etiquette
Bow once before passing under the torii
The torii marks the threshold between the everyday world and the sacred. A small bow acknowledges the crossing.
Purify at the temizuya (water pavilion)
Left hand, then right, then rinse your mouth from the left, then cleanse the handle. One ladle of water carries you through all four motions.
At the main hall: two bows, two claps, one bow
Deep bow twice, clap twice with intention, offer your silent greeting, then one final deep bow. No coin is required.
Leave quietly. Let the shrine follow you out
A pilgrimage does not end at the gate. The stillness travels with you.
