Izumo Taisha.
On the western coast of Japan, where the sea and the mountains meet, stands one of the country's oldest shrines.
Long before written records, people had already been gathering here. Some scholars believe this site may be older than two thousand years.
Once each year, in the tenth month of the old lunar calendar, an extraordinary thing is said to happen. Across all of Japan, eight million local spirits are believed to leave their home shrines and travel to Izumo. Everywhere else in Japan, this month is called "the month without gods." Here, it is called "the month with gods."
What do they discuss when they gather here? According to old belief — they decide the threads of human relationships. Who will meet whom. Whose paths will cross. Which connections will deepen, which will quietly end.
If you have ever felt that someone entered your life at exactly the right time — Izumo is where, in the old story, that meeting was arranged.
The shrine has its own way of bowing. Two bows, four claps, one bow. The four claps are unusual. They open the four directions to the unseen world.
Stand before the great hall. Lower your voice. Bow deeply.
A connection you do not yet know is being woven, somewhere quiet, with your name on it.
