In the green hills of northern Kyushu, where the sea breeze still carries the salt of the inland sea, stands the headquarters of one of Japan's largest sacred networks.
Forty thousand sister shrines across the country trace their origin to this single forest. The faith began here, more than thirteen centuries ago, and quietly spread.
In the year 749, when the great bronze Buddha of Nara was being completed, the imperial court was running out of gold. They sent a messenger to this shrine to ask for guidance. According to the old record, an answer came back: "Gold will be found." Soon after, gold was discovered in northeastern Japan for the first time, and the great Buddha was finished.
This shrine has carried that kind of weight ever since. Not loud weight. Slow weight. The kind that changes the course of a country.
Walk under the great vermillion gates that rise between the trees. Cross the small arched bridge. The path winds, deliberately, so you cannot see your destination too soon.
The bowing here is unusual. Two bows, four claps, one bow. Most shrines use two claps. Four asks something larger, more open.
Stand before the main hall. Take your time.
This place has been holding answers for over a thousand years. It is not in a hurry.
