Founded in the legendary age, Kibitsu Shrine is venerated as the origin point of the Momotaro tale. Prince Okibitsuhiko subdued the demon Ura in a great battle, an event that crystallized into the beloved folktale taught to Japanese children for over a thousand years. The shrine's main hall, rebuilt in 1425 after centuries of worship, is Japan's finest example of Kibitsu-zukuri architecture—a style found nowhere else and designated a National Treasure.
